2019 Most Powerful Women in Accounting

The AICPA’s Women’s Initiatives Executive Committee (WIEC) and CPA Practice Advisor are looking for outstanding women professionals who continue to make their mark on the accounting profession as well as those who are emerging as the next generation of firm leaders, whether through new technologies, practices, workflow or dynamic work environments. Please use this form to nominate the women who are having the greatest impact on the tax and accounting profession.

Those honored with this recognition are women who demonstrated three attributes:

  1. They have been the driving force to create a culture of innovation or excellence within their firm, or helped, as a vendor, develop the technologies that will empower firms to be more productive and profitable
  2. They reached the highest level of management and ownership within their company and their leadership demonstrated an impact on the success of the organization
  3. They have been mentoring those following in their footsteps

Our 25 winners will be recognized publicly at AICPA Engage 2019 on Wednesday, June 12th at 9:15 AM and featured in the June 2019 issue of CPA Practice Advisor magazine.

Welcome to the 2019 P. Thomas Austin Scholarship Application

The AICPA has established the P. Thomas Austin Personal Financial Planning Division Scholarship in honor of the CPA who has chaired the Advanced Estate Planning Conference for three decades.

The scholarship will cover the registration fee and travel expenses of an emerging CPA to attend the 2019 Advanced Estate Planning Conference at AICPA ENGAGE. The program will provide attendees with cutting edge estate planning guidance as well as networking opportunities with seasoned estate planners.

Eligible applicants must meet all of the requirements listed below.

  • Hold a valid, unrevoked CPA license issued by a qualified state board of accountancy
  • Be a member in good standing with the AICPA
  • Be a practitioner with 10 years or fewer of experience as a CPA
  • PFS credential holder or PFS candidates will receive special consideration.

Advanced Personal Financial Planning Awards

The Standing Ovation Award

The AICPA’s Standing Ovation Program recognizes young CPAs who exhibit exemplary professional achievement in one or more of the following areas: business valuation, forensic accounting, information management and technology assurance, or personal financial planning.

2019 Distinguished Service Award

The award is granted annually to an AICPA member whose volunteer efforts have made significant contributions to the personal financial planning profession including tax, retirement, estate, risk management and investments.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The criteria for the award, which was first given in 2011, include 25 years of experience in financial planning and 15 years of AICPA volunteer work in personal financial planning. Recipients must have unquestioned integrity and professionalism and exemplify the personal, ethical, and professional characteristics of the model CPA advisor. The recipient must be approved by the current and past two chairmen of the PFP Executive Committee, as well as the Committee members.

Outstanding Young CPA Award celebration lunch

The AICPA Outstanding Young CPA Award in Honor of Maximo Mukelabai recognizes a young CPA who personifies an unwavering commitment as demonstrated through successful practices, involvement in and contributions for the interest of the accounting profession.

The Sidney Kess Award for Excellence in Continuing Education

The Sidney Kess Award for Excellence in Continuing Education is designed to recognize an individual who has made significant and outstanding contributions in tax and financial planning continuing education and whose integrity and public service exemplify the AICPA’s Values and Vision.

AAM Recognizes Excellence Awards

CPAFMA Awards & Recognition Reception 2019

This annual award is presented by the CPA Firm Management Association (CPAFMA) and has been awarded to some of North America’s most experienced and respected firm management professionals since its inception in 1989.

The FMAward honors a firm manager holding a senior-level management position for a public accounting firm. Criteria for selection focus on leadership and the individual's strategic impact on the firm's profit and growth. Strong candidates will have made major contributions to their firms by implementing and overseeing programs that:

  • contribute to the firm's long-term growth;
  • help the firm meet its strategic goals;
  • improve firm profitability;
  • help create an employee-friendly culture; and
  • emphasize the value of firm management, operations and leadership

The 2019 FMAward will be presented at CPAFMA’s National Practice Management Conference in Las Vegas during our FMA19NL03 session, This Ain’t Your Mama’s Culture and Awards Lunch. Recipients receive a one-year complimentary CPAFMA membership, free attendance at the next year’s CPAFMA National Practice Management Conference, a handsome plaque and promotion for both the individual and the firm.

The CPAFMA Emerging Leader of the Year Award honors an individual who demonstrates a dedication to the CPA firm management profession through strong leadership, teamwork, and integrity, while continually developing their knowledge and experience, necessary in this ever-changing business. The Emerging Leader must also be a strong advocate of CPAFMA’s mission to lead CPA firm practice management by empowering all CPA firms to thrive by expanding knowledge, sharing experiences, achieving through collaboration, influencing leadership and envisioning possibilities.

Nominees must meet the following criteria for consideration for the CPAFMA Emerging Leader of the Year Award:

  • Currently working for a CPAFMA member firm in good standing.
  • Meets the definition of an emerging leader: an individual with up to five years of leadership experience in a CPA firm management role.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and teamwork skills and has made a major impact with his/her firm’s success.
  • Demonstrates a strong sense of integrity.
  • Demonstrates interaction with the firm’s partners and staff.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to CPAFMA’s mission.

The 2019 Emerging Leader of the Year Award will be presented at CPAFMA’s National Practice Management Conference in Las Vegas during our FMA19NL03 session, This Ain’t Your Mama’s Culture and Awards Lunch. Recipients receive a handsome plaque and promotion for both the individual and the firm in addition to one year of complimentary CPAFMA MAPCasts for the recipient’s firm.

CPAFMA’s Distinguished Service Awards are presented to individuals for those who have made an outstanding contribution to CPAFMA and the profession and have served as a resource and example to CPAFMA members. The award is awarded at the discretion of the board of directors and our 2019 Distinguished Service Awards will be presented during our FMA-ily Feud Breakfast from 7-8:00 AM on June 12.

Thomas Austin Scholarship Award

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has established the P. Thomas Austin Personal Financial Planning Division Scholarship in honor of the CPA who has chaired the Advanced Estate Planning Conference for three decades.

The scholarship will cover the registration fee and travel expenses of an emerging CPA to attend the 2018 Advanced Estate Planning at ENGAGE Conference. The program will provide attendees with cutting edge estate planning guidance as well as networking opportunities with seasoned estate planners.

2018 Winner: Matthew Rosenberg

The Sidney Kess Award for Excellence in Continuing Education

The Sidney Kess Award for Excellence in Continuing Education is presented by the Steering Committee for the AICPA Conference on Tax Strategies for the High-Income Individual. The Kess Award is designed to recognize an individual who has made significant and outstanding contributions in tax and financial planning continuing education and whose integrity and public service exemplify the AICPA's Values and Vision.

Sarenski is a frequent lecturer and author. He presents at major professional national conferences for a variety of organizations on financial planning topics, including Social Security. Sarenski wrote The CPA's Guide to Social Security Planning and updates it annually. He has contributed articles to The Journal of Accountancy, The CPA Journal, The Journal of Taxation and the AICPA Wealth Management Insider.

Sarenski currently appears on WSTM-3, Syracuse's NBC affiliate, taking viewers' calls and offering planning concepts. He also appeared on the PBS affiliate in Syracuse as a permanent guest host of the program "Financial Fitness." Sarenski has done hundreds of radio interviews and has been quoted frequently in such publications as USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Consumer Reports, The Christian Science Monitor, InvestmentNews, Kiplinger Personal Finance Report, Financial Planning Magazine, Accounting Today and The Practical Accountant.
